Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2020 Subaru Forester Towing U-Haul Trailer

Published 04/22/2023

Question:

Hi. I want to install a reliable and versatile trailer hitch on my daughter’s 2020 Subaru Forester that will give her the ability to trail a 4X8 or 5x8 UHaul type trailer. To do this, I realize that we need a 2” ball and a Class III hitch but I am concerned that this might damage the chassis or transmission. Should I not be concerned? Thanks for the advise.

Towing a U-Haul trailer or anything else with your 2020 Subaru Forester won't cause damage as long as your daughter doesn't exceed the capacity of the vehicle. From what I have found, the max towing capacity is 1,500 lbs. Make sure to double check your owner's manual to be sure.

For a hitch I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C47HR. This hitch has a concealed cross tube so it will have a clean look with only the receiver hanging down at the back. This will also allow for more clearance. I know this carries a higher price tag, so if neither of those are a concern I'd go with the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e83ZR instead. Even though both have a max gross trailer weight of 3,500 lbs she will still be limited by the capacity of the vehicle.

In addition to a hitch she will also need trailer wiring. The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118467 will plug into the connection point in the rear cargo area and provide a 4-way to power the trailer's signal lights. For a ball mount, check out the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900. This kit has two ball mounts, one with a 3/4" rise or 2" drop and the other with a 2-3/4" rise or 4" drop. It also comes with a 1-7/8" and 2" ball, as well as a ball mount bag to store everything in.

I have attached some installation and review videos below for your reference.
