Should Weight Distribution and Sway Control be Used for 6,000 lb GVWR Travel Trailer
Published 06/08/2022 >
Question:
After years of Class A RVing we’ve made the move to a travel trailer. We just bought a 2021 Jaco 212 QBW and will be pulling it with our 2019 Durango RT. The pertinent numbers are: Jayco Unloaded weight 4135 lbs Dry Hitch weight 460 lbs GVWR. 6000 LBS Durango RT GCWR. 13,100 lbs Gross Trailer weight 7200 lbs Max Tongue weight 720 lbs These numbers should give me plenty of margin for safe towing. My question is, should I get a WD rig? And if so, should I get one with anti sway control? My gut tells me yes to both questions. Even though the Durango has the HP and Torque, and is equipped with a factory tow package, it’s still a relatively short wheelbase vehicle.

When in doubt, go with your gut. In this case your gut is 100% correct - you'll have a nice cushion in margin when it comes to maxing out your 2019 Dodge Durango, but you'll want a weight distribution system to help level out your towing rig and the sway control will do wonders for highway traveling especially when it comes to crosswinds and when larger vehicles pass you.
For your application I recommend checking out the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/Sway Control # BLU23FR which has a tongue weight range of 600 lbs - 800 lbs, it comes with a 2-5/16" hitch ball, and it sits in that sweet spot between quality and price range.
