Question:

I am considering fabricating a foldable receiver mounted spare tire carrier. I would like to use the Ultra fab folding spare tire carrier UF15-954730, or the Stromberg-carlson TR-1 combined with the pintle/plate #63056. My vehicle is a 2010 MB 350 GL Bluetec which is stocked with a can of fix-a-flat and a 12v compressor. Even though I have run-on-flat tires I would feel safer with a full size spare when I go on a long interstate trips. I also want the folding capability to get at the rear cargo when I need to.

As you can see in the photo, the bolt holes of the # 63056 and the # TR-1 and # UF15-954730 will not match up.

Although you could drill additional holes in the tire mount that would match up with those of the pintle mount, the two pieces really are not meant to work together.

Another concern I have is that the Ultra-Fab and Stromberg Carlson spare tire tire carriers are meant to be used for trailer tires which are typically smaller and lighter than wheels/tires used on a car, truck or SUV. The hinge that allows the tire carrier to pivot downward is typically the weak point, using an automotive tire/wheel could possibly cause the carrier to fail during transport resulting in the loss of the wheel.

Although it does not tilt, I would recommend using the Curt Trailer Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier, part # C31006. The tire and carrier would be easily removed if the need arises to access the rear cargo area so it would not be as convenient, but it would be a much safer alternative.
