Trailer Tire and Wheel Recommendation for Smaller Motorcycle Trailer with Higher Speed Rating
Question:
I am researching building a motorcycle cargo trailer that will weigh 140-180 empty, an no more than 500 pounds loaded. Usual load will probably be under 300 pounds. I am looking into trailer rims for this trailer. Many trailer kits use 12 inch rims for small trailers. Are 12 inch rims satisfactory for 70-80 MPH sustained all day long? Do you offer any 15 or 16 inch rims lightweight enough for this application? Are tires or the bearing the speed limitation for manufacturers?

Typically, what limits the speed a trailer can go is the tire's speed rating. Most tires are rated for only 65 mph, but some are now getting rated higher. For a 12-inch diameter wheel and tire setup we have the part # TA78RR which is rated for 81 mph and would work great on a smaller trailer. It weighs 40 lbs and has a 5-bolt mounting pattern. When building the trailer, I'd recommend making sure you install hubs that have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern so that you can use this wheel/tire setup and have the speed rating you need. This bolt pattern is very common and easily can be found on lower capacity axles as well.
I attached a review video for this wheel/tire for more info for you to check out as well.
