For a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 with the 5.3 liter the towing capacity will be one of the following depending on how your truck is configured:
Regular Cab, Long Bed
3.73 rear end, 8,000
4.10 rear end, 9,000
Crew Cab, Long Bed
3.73 rear end, 7,500 pounds
4.10 rear end, 8,500 pounds
Extended Cab, Long Bed
3.73 rear end, 7,600 pounds
4.10 rear end, 8,600 pounds
Regular Cab, Short Bed
3.73 rear end, 8,200 pounds
4.10 rear end, 9,200 pounds
Extended Cab, Short Bed
3.73 rear end, 7,800 pounds
4.10 rear end, 8,800 pounds
Extended Cab, Short Bed with 4-wheel steering
3.73 rear end, 7,400 pounds
4.10 rear end, 8,400 pounds
So long story short you would have the capacity needed to tow a 7,000 lb fifth wheel trailer. You'll need a rail kit to install a fifth wheel hitch in the bed of your truck. For that you'd want a custom install kit like the Reese part # RP50064-58 which fits your truck. Custom fit kits install in about half the time as a universal kit and minimize drilling too.
If you have a long bed you'll want a fixed hitch like the part # RP30047 or if you have a short bed truck you'll need a slider like part # RP30051. Prices are available below at the available link.
