Question:

Hello I am purchasing a hitch for my 2012 ford escape, 2.5 l , 4 cyl engine. Am planning to also add a transmission cooler as well. I have a class 3 unit in mind even though its overkill for the vehicle. Planning light towing only. Was looking at the etrailer e56AR. Would this be OK ? Also what wiring harness would you recommend. The car does not have back up assist. cheers

The etrailer Class III hitch # e56AR is a confirmed fit on your 2012 Ford Escape and when the option exist, we almost always recommend a 2-inch Class III hitch over the smaller Class II since the capacity is much higher and the cost is not. In terms of ground clearance, a 1-1/4-inch hitch might win the comparison. For a wiring harness you can use 4-pole kit # 118551 which works on Escapes with or without the backup sensors. Install videos for both items are linked for you.

You may also want to consider the handy Ball Mount Kit # 989900 which provides two hitch ball sizes, two ball mounts, and the required pins and clips, all together in a handy kit that includes a storage bag.

A supplementary transmission cooler to reduce thermal stress is good protection for any vehicle that will be towing a trailer. The Derale cooler I suggest for your 2.5L Escape is the Class III cooler model # D13503. This will ideally mount in front of your AC condenser where it will get the most air flow. It will take in your transmission fluid that has been cooled inside your radiator and further reduce its temperature before returning it to the transmission case.
