If your 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac has the factory 4-Way flat installed, you will need to use the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. This kit includes everything needed to install a fully functional 7-Way from your existing 4-Way, along with the additional wiring needed for a trailer brake controller. I have attached a great article that details the installation steps for this kit and a video on your 2003 Explorer Sport Trac that you can use for reference.
With the 7-Way connector installed, you will then just need the trailer brake controller itself. For this, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. This is an excellent proportional controller that will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your vehicle. It features an easy to read digital display and continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues. This unit is well known for its reliability and ease of use.
I have included the written installation manual for this controller that you can also take a look at.
This will give you everything needed to connect your Explorer Sport Trac to your trailer's 7-Way and activate/control its brakes.
