According to the information contained in the owner's manual beginning on page 9-56 of the owner's manual, the tow capacity of the VEHICLE will depend on the engine size and whether or not the vehicle has brakes. Terrain models with the 2.4 L engine can tow up to 1500 lbs and with the 3.0 L, up to 3500 lbs. GMC states that if the trailer doesn't have brakes, the capacity is reduced to 1000 lbs.
The capacity of the HITCH itself should be listed on a sticker affixed to the hitch, which would likely be 350 lbs of tongue weight (maximum amount of downward force that can be applied to the hitch) or 3500 lbs towing, like the # e98865 etrailer Class III hitch. You will be limited to the capacity of the lowest rated component, whether it be the vehicle or the hitch.
If you'd care to reply and tell me what you're wanting to tow or carry, I'd be happy to make some further suggestions.

I have a 2012 GMC Terrain SLT ( its the V6 3.5L engine.. with AWD). I’m looking to pull a 2110 pound boat. However i need to put a tow hitch on the GMC. Which tow hitch would you recommend? And does it the AWD make it more difficult. Thanks!
