What Parts are Needed to Add Electric Trailer Brakes to a 1998 Coleman Fleetwood Pop-up Camper
Published 07/25/2012 >
Question:
My camper has all the wiring there for electric brakes and battery hook ups. I want to install electric brakes to the camper and not sure which ones to go with. I am pulling the camper with a smaller truck now and want the extra stopping power. My tire size is 175/80/13.

To add electric brakes to the trailer, besides the correct wiring you will also need to make sure that you have brake mounting flanges that are welded to the axle. If not, you will need to add them, see link. They should be installed by a qualified professional with experience in this type of work because it is a precision job.
Next you will need the correct hub and drum assemblies. To get the correct fit, you will need to go by the inner and outer bearing numbers. These numbers are stamped into the metal of the bearings themselves. With these numbers you can get the correct hub and drum assemblies, see link.
After you identify the correct hub and drums, you can choose the correct size brakes. Drums have a specific inner diameter and width that is compatible with the shoes on brake assemblies. You will need to know the drum size before you can get the right brakes, see link.
When you have everything installed and wired up, you will need something to control the brakes so you will need a brake controller for the truck. Depending on the year, make, and model of the truck and how it is equipped (with a 4-Way, 7-Way or other connector) there may be a plug in simple type of connection or you may need to hardwire it in.
For a brake controller I recommend the P2, # 90885. This is one of our most popular controllers because it is easy to set up and easy to use. I have included a link to a FAQ article that will also help you.
