I did some research and found that the maximum trailer towing capacity for a 2003 Ford Taurus is 1750 lbs. I recommend checking the owner's manual or with a dealership to make sure you do not exceed the towing capacity for your Taurus. You will also want to check the total weight of the trailer you want to tow. It should be weighed in its fully-loaded-ready-to-tow condition.
The trailer hitches we offer for your Taurus are either Class l or Class ll hitches with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening.
I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12232. This is a Class ll hitch and is a bolt-on installation.
If trailer wiring is needed I recommend part # 119178KIT if your Taurus is a Wagon. This adapts the 3-wire system on the Taurus to a 2-wire system on the trailer. This will also work with either incandescent or LED lights. This kit comes with the circuit tester included.
If you have a Sedan I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C55375. This kit requires no cutting or splicing into the vehicle wiring. It simply installs by using the connection points located in the trunk.
When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
For towing I recommend the Draw-Tite ball mount, part # 36061. This ball mount provides a 3-1/8 inch rise from the top of the receiver tube. for a 1-7/8 inch diameter hitch ball I recommend part # 19257. If a 2 inch ball is needed the part number to order is # 19258.
I have attached a couple of installation videos you can check out.
