All of the 2 inch hitches currently available for the 2009 Ford Escape, Curt, Draw-Tite, and Hidden Hitch, will extend beyond the bumper some, but not a whole lot. In a lot of cases it comes with the territory of a 2 inch hitch. The larger hitches are capable of more weight and more accessories, but that larger size makes the hitch more visible and in many cases it will stick out a little bit beyond the vehicle. I have added a link to a picture of a Class III hitch, installed on an Escape as well as a video of it being installed.
My wife and I had the same problem with our Escape, so I put a hitch cover on it, part # CR-211, that draws attention enough that we do not forget it is there. It is just a plain Ford emblem, but it is enough to do the trick.
