Question:

Hi, I had purchased a 4 pin connector for my 2006 Ford Freestyle from you guys a while back. I recently acquired a new trailer that takes a 7 pin blade connector, the trailer has brakes. I see there are 4 to 7 pin adapters, but I had a question about them, will they still control the brakes without additional wiring? Or do they need tapped into the brake wiring? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for entrusting etrailer in the past and we appreciate your business.

What you need is an adapter 4 pole to 7 pole and 4 pole such as part # 37185. This adapter converts from 4 pole wiring on vehicle to 7 pole round plug and 4 pole flat. See diagram to the right.

Since you will be installing additional wiring, 10 gauge jacketed wire # 10-2-1 would be a great option. One wire is connected to the brake controller which carries the power back for the trailer brakes while the other is connected directly to the vehicle battery. The brake controller I recommend is Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. The brake controller activates your trailer brakes in proportion to your Ford Freestyle's braking action.

I highly recommend using dielectric grease part # 11755 to help prevent corrosion from water exposure. See the GMC Savana video I included at the 2:30 mark.
