Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring Harness Shorts Out Every Couple Years on 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser
Published 10/29/2014 >
Question:
This is the second wiring harness I have installed on this car. They seem to only last a couple of years. On both harnesses I had the same problem. When first installed they worked great after about a year I start having trouble.

What usually causes taillight converter wiring harnesses like the part 118462 to break is a short on the trailer wiring or they get overdrawn. They have discontinued that particular harness because I believe they were having that overdrawn amperage issue.
Before you replace your wiring harness I would recommend you make sure that the wiring on your trailer isn't damaged anywhere which would cause a short and fry the converter. Look for corrosion or exposed wire and fix as necessary.
Also, when you do replace the harness I would recommend you go with the Curt harness part # C55532 instead as this harness has a higher amperage rating and because Curt converters use a more modern style of circuit board which is less prone to shorting out and we have seen this be a better fit on your particular vehicle.
I attached an FAQ on troubleshooting 4-way installs for you to check out as well.
