Recommendations For Towing A 2005 Ford Focus

Published 10/22/2014

Question:

Hello, I am interested in purchasing the bx2184 base plate for my 2005 Ford Focus. After reading the requirements, its noted that it is intended for vehicles with manual transmissions, mine is an automatic. What criteria is there for hauling a vehicle with automatic transmissions? Thanks for your help.

Per the owner's manual for your 2005 Ford Focus, it states that if you have an automatic transmission, the vehicle cannot be towed with the front wheels on the ground. For towing, you will need to use a tow dolly.

The tow dolly I recommend is the RoadMaster Tow Dolly with Electric Brakes, part # RM-2050-1. This dolly will allow you to be able to tow your Focus and keep the front wheels off the ground, and not have to use a transmission lube pump or disconnect the driveshaft. This tow dolly also comes with electric brakes, safety cables, adjustable axle and ramps, and adjustable wheel nets.

It will require a brake controller in the towing vehicle. The brake controller I recommend is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. This is one of our most popular because it is easy to install and operate.

When towing you will need lights on your towed vehicle. I recommend the magnetic towing lights, part # RM-2120. These have magnetic bases and can be used when you do not plan on towing often.
