You would want to install a brake controller. You should check with your local laws and regulations to determine what towing setups are required to have trailer brakes activated by a brake controller. Some states require trailer brakes and a brake controller on any vehicle that is towing a trailer, but in your situation I would strongly recommend one.
We recommend that at the very least if the trailer weighs over 50 percent of the weight of the tow vehicle than a brake controller should be used.
For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup.
If you have a factory 7-way all you would need to install the controller is the harness part # 3040-P.
If you do not have a 7-way you will also need a Hopkins Tow Package Wiring Kit # HM11143395.
