Parts Needed to Convert Boat Trailer from Surge Disc Brakes to Electric-Over-Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Updated 09/10/2014 | Published 09/07/2014

Question:

I have a double axel King trailer for my boat that I would like to convert from surge brakes to electric over hydraulic. The trailer has disc brakes. The tow vehicle is a 2009 Toyota Tacoma with tow package/7-pin connector. I do not have a brake controller so would need one as well. The tongue is 3inch wide and currently has a Titan Model 60 surge coupler for a 2inch ball. To fit more stuff on the tongue Ill probably need to replace the Titan coupler with something simple to make room for the actuator etc. To summarize, Id like recommendations for: - a controller for the Toyota - a replacement coupler for a 2inch ball - the actuator - whatever else is needed like an emergency break-away sensor. Can you help?

A good starting point for your project to convert your tandem boat trailer from surge disc brakes to electric-over-hydraulic disc brakes is a read of the linked article, which covers this process completely.

For a brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885; this is among the most popular and reliable units we offer and it will work with both electric brakes and electric over hydraulic (EOH) systems. You'll use quick-connect harness # 3040-P to plug the controller in under your dash.

You can keep your existing surge coupler by simply drilling through it from side to side and installing bolts/nuts to immobilize the moving portion.

You can use Titan kit # T4813102 which includes a breakaway kit as well as the actuator.
