Curt Trailer Wiring Harness Brake Light and Turn Signal Pins Not Working on 2014 Nissan Murano

Question:

I just installed the Curt 55571 on a 2014 Nissan Murano and connected the 4 pole connector to my trailer to test it. The brake and signal lights are not working. FYI The trailer is not connected to a hitch because I have not installed it yet - just connected the wiring harness from the hitch to the Curt harness. I grounded the white ground wire to an existing bolt and wonder if it is not properly grounded. Could a poor groundbe the problem? I had to purchase a 10 amp mini fuse which I put in a vacant space in the fuse box labled trailer. Not sure where to start to trouble shoot. Please help.

An insufficient ground could cause the trailer lights or select trailer lights to not work. The trailer should not have to be hitched up to the vehicle for the lights to work. If it does then that indicates a ground problem.

Make sure the Curt wiring harness # 55571 is ground to a clean bare metal surface. There can be no paint or corrosion. It also works best when grounded by itself.

You may also want to consult the owners manual for your 2014 Nissan Murano to see if there are any additional fuses or relays that you will need to go with the one you have already installed.

It is also possible that there is a ground issue on the trailer. Ground problems normally show up when there is more draw on a system such as when you have the running lights on and then use another function like a turn signal or brake light.

Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.

The light grounds should also be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. If there is anything between a light ground and the metal trailer frame or if the trailer has an aluminum frame, tilt bed, or folding tongue, any of these things can interrupt the ground. Running jumper wires from the light grounds to the main trailer connector ground can help.
