Thanks for letting us help Matt. A 20 lb tank is the safest practical starting point for use with the Excel RV Tankless Water Heater # EX93FR. This is a standard propane tank size used in RV applications and will provide plenty of fuel for the water heater to operate properly. I wasn't able to find a specific minimum tank size requirement from Excel, so it's possible that a smaller tank would work as well. The important thing is that the tank can supply enough propane vapor to keep up with the water heater's demand. A properly rated regulator like Camco Single Stage Propane Regulator # CAM59013 will provide the consistent gas pressure needed for the water heater to operate properly.

The # EX93FR has a maximum heating capacity of 38,000 BTUs per hour. For comparison, a full 20 lb propane tank contains approximately 430,000 BTUs, which would give you roughly 11 hours of continuous operation at full output. That's assuming the water heater is running nonstop at maximum capacity. In normal use, you'll likely get quite a bit more time out of a tank since the heater only burns propane when there's a demand for hot water.

Do you have a specific sized tank in mind? If you can give me a little more information about what you're trying to do, I can provide further guidance.
