Victron Orion XS 50A vs 70A for Charging RV Lithium Batteries

Updated 10/19/2026 | Published 10/17/2026

Question:

I'm installing a 400Ah lithium battery bank in my camper van and want to charge it while we're driving. I'm looking at the 50 amp and 70 amp Victron Orion XS chargers. Is there a reason to choose the 70 amp model, or will the 50 amp be enough?

Hey Jason! I'd lean toward the Victron Orion XS 70A DC-DC Battery Charger # VN266FR for your larger battery bank, provided your alternator has enough spare capacity and your batteries allow that charging rate. Its higher output can put more power back into your batteries during shorter drives. The 50A Orion XS # VN93VR is still a good option when 50 amps meets your charging needs, or if your alternator can't support the additional load.

Both let you adjust charging current through the VictronConnect app, so you can match the charger to your electrical system instead of always running at full output. You'll need appropriately sized wiring and fuses, and the 70A model needs a dry, ventilated mounting location since it uses cooling fans and isn't waterproof.

What kind of camper van do you have?

It's a Mercedes Sprinter 3500. We do a lot of traveling between campgrounds and sometimes only drive a couple hours a day, so getting more charge into the batteries during those shorter drives would be nice.

@Jason that makes sense! The 70A # VN266FR sounds like the better choice for how you travel, assuming your Sprinter's alternator has the capacity to support it. Being able to put more charge back into your batteries during those shorter drives will definitely come in handy.
