Can this rack handle a 3 bike platform rack without any supporting strap? I assume yes. How about a 5 bike vertical VelociRax?

Hey Joe. Our etrailer Hitch item # e84AR will indeed handle a 3-bike platform bike rack without any supporting strap, however it is not rated for a vertical bike rack. Instead you'll need the EcoHitch item # EH44FR if you have backup sensors or item # 306-X7265 if you do not.
The EcoHitch item # EH44FR and item # 306-X7265 are custom fit for the 2016 BMW X5. These hitches are rated to be used with vertical bike racks like the VelociRax so long as you stay below the tongue weight capacity. These are class III hitches with a 2" receiver that have a 750 lbs tongue weight capacity. They include all hardware necessary to complete the installation.
A nice perk of the EcoHitch item # EH44FR and item # 306-X7265 is that the 2" receiver is removable when you're not using it. The entire crosstube mounts behind the rear bumper as well, so when you remove the 2" receiver you won't even be able to tell you have a hitch installed.

-16 x5 50 with M body kit. ETrailer kit was easy to install, it’s undetectable when not in use and I cut NOTHING of the car’s trim. Regularly I pull an aluminum trailer w 2 dirt bikes, happy!
