Can Thetford Toilet Seal Conditioner be Used for RV Waste Valves

Published 10/07/2026

Question:

Hi there, I have a Brinkley g series rv. The gate valves are all hidden deep under the underbelly of the rv. I had a valve stick on me for a short time while out on a trip. I am pretty sure the gate valve needs some kind of lubricant but it is very hard to access from underneath. I have the thetford toilet seal lubricant on hand, but I dont have the gate valve lubricant. If I just use the thetford toilet seal conditioner in my grey tanks will that work? If so how much do I put into each grey tank, And can I just use that from then onward? Or should I buy the gate valve lubricant to eleviate future problems. Thank you

Hey Jonathan, yes using your Thetford Toilet Seal Conditioner in your grey tanks will work to lubricate your gate valves. Because it is a non-petroleum, silicone-based formula, it is entirely safe for all rubber seals and valves throughout your RV sanitation system.

To lubricate your grey tank gate valves using the toilet seal conditioner, use 6 ounces (1/4 bottle) per grey tank:

Do not pour it down the toilet for your grey tanks, as that goes straight to the black tank. Instead, pour 6 ounces down your kitchen sink drain (for Grey Tank 1) and 6 ounces down your shower or bathroom sink drain

For this to work on hidden valves, pour it into the drains when the tanks are mostly empty. Let it sit for at least 8 hours (ideally overnight) so the silicone can pool down at the base of the pipe and properly coat the gate valve seals. After letting it sit, actuate the valve handles back and forth several times to spread the lubricant.
