Brake Winch Recommendation to Raise and Lower Two 175 Pound Spare Tires on a Rally Chase Truck

Updated 07/31/2014 | Published 07/30/2014

Question:

Im building a rally chase truck with mounting for two spares. The height of the truck precludes easy removal of the spares 175+ lbs each. We came up with a lowering arm solution but we need a winch that can safely lower and raise this load. Max distance should be 8 feet. Straps and cable are acceptable. Anything you guys carry thatll fit the bill?

The best option for a brake winch and the controlled movement of a load is a worm gear winch # DL11011. This winch has a 1500 pound capacity, will automatically brake when the handle is released, and does not require a minimum amount of weight to operate.

Worm gear winches are slow, but this particular one has a unique feature that will allow you to connect a variable speed drill using a 5/8 inch socket to making lowering and raising the load fast and easy. But cranking a winch is good cardio exercise should you ever need it! I have linked a video review of this winch for you.

The max drum capacity using a 1/4 inch cable is 43 feet of cable. But you can use a shorter, smaller diameter cable, # DL24043 for a 3/16 inch, 25 foot long.
