2020 Volkswagen GTI EcoHitch Compatibility

Published 09/24/2026

Question:

I have the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class II - 1-1/4inch Part Number: 306-X7310 installed on my 2016 VW GTI SE. I just purchased a 2020 VW GTI SE and would like to remove the trailer hitch from my 2016 to install on your 2020. Will this work?

Hi Vicki, I wish I had better news, but the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver you have on your 2016 VW GTI, part # 306-X7310, will not fit your 2020 GTI. That hitch is designed for the 2015 through 2017 Golf GTI models. For your 2020 VW GTI, the EcoHitch option with the 1-1/4 inch receiver is part # 306-X7376. It has the same nice hidden design you like, but it is specifically designed to fit the 2020 GTI.

I know it would have been nice to simply move the hitch you already have over to the new GTI, but unfortunately the mounting points are different between the two generations. If keeping the 1 -1/4 inch receiver is important to you, the # 306-X7376 will be the correct EcoHitch option for your 2020 GTI. If you would like to upgrade to a 2" hitch, you can go with EcoHitch Stealth Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 306-X7375.

Are you planning to use the hitch for the same accessory you used on your 2016?

Thanks for the fast response! Yes, I'm planning to use the hitch with the same bike rack I already have (Swagman XTC2 Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount (Part Number: S64670)), and I want as much clearance as possible so that neither the hitch nor the bike rack drag on hills. With both of those criteria in mind, is # 306-X7376 your top recommendation?

@VickiL Awesome! That is a great rack. I still recommend the 306-X7376, this will have the best clearance compared to the other options because the receiver sits right underneath your bumper.
