Hidden Cross Tube for a Clean, Factory Look

The EcoHitch Hidden trailer hitch is designed to be as inconspicuous as possible. The hitch's cross tube bolts onto your vehicle's frame, behind your rear bumper. No drilling or welding is required. Once the hitch is installed, only the receiver will be visible beneath your bumper. This means that your vehicle can maintain its stylish, from-the-factory look, and you won't have to do any major modifications to its body or frame.

Eco-Friendly Material

With a combination of aerospace-grade aluminum, steel, and stainless steel, each EcoHitch is made of a strong metal alloy that will withstand the test of time. The lightweight alloy is composed of recycled materials. Traditional steel hitch manufacturing can use coal or oil, which can contribute to harmful gas emissions. The EcoHitch's recycled materials limit the carbon footprint during manufacturing, so you get a sturdy trailer hitch while also helping the environment.

Rigorous Strength Testing Ensures Durability

This EcoHitch trailer hitch is tested for durability and sturdiness. Using Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA), individual points of stress on the hitch can be detected and remedied. Designers can accurately test the hitch to ensure that it will meet or exceed SAE J684 standards. The EcoHitch Hidden trailer hitch is carefully researched and strength tested for a durable, high-quality hitch that can resist damage while on the road.

Video Transcript for EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Volkswagen Golf

Speaker 1: Today on this 2017 Volkswagen Golf, we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the EcoHitch hidden class 2 trailer hitch receiver, part number 306-X7310.Here's what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see, without a rear fascia installed, this hitch is completely hidden behind the fascia and it attaches very simply behind our bumper beam, utilizing existing weld nuts in the frame and existing holes. So there's no drilling required. So if you want to put a hitch on your Golf, your Golf GTI and still have the sporty appearance, but yet not have a very visible hitch, this is a great option for you. On the side of our receiver, you'll find our industry standard half inch diameter hitch pin hole to secure any of your hitch mounted accessories. On the bottom here is our plate style safety chain loops. And what's great about these, that even though this is a inch and a quarter hitch with small loops on it, we can still easily clip on and remove a large diameter safety chain hook such as this one.

Welded on the back of it, we have this nice collar that helps reinforce the strength of our receiver opening and also gives us a nice finished look. Now the great thing is that it's made out of recycled materials. So for those of you that are concerned about the environment, you don't have to worry about creating a bigger carbon footprint with this. The alloy construction with recycled steels and other metals, it's a great option for you.Now this hitch does have a 200 pound max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down. And a 2,000 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull. You want to make sure you consult with the owners manual of your Golf and go by whichever number is lower.

You don't want to exceed the limits of the vehicle. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounted accessory you may need, such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. You're looking at about 12 inches to the top of the inch and a quarter receiver opening. And about five inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rear most portion of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, I'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we have several fasteners that we need to remove underneath our back fascia here. We have a couple right in the center, one on each side.

With the screw removed, we can now take a trim panel tool and pry out the larger clip. We'll do the same on both sides. All right, now we need to remove our mud flap. Your vehicle may or may not have them. We're working on a GTI model, so we do have them.

And we'll have four Torx fasteners just like this one on the inside to remove. With the last screw removed, we can take our mud flap, pull it away from the vehicle and set it aside. Now where our fender liner and our fascia meet, close to where the fascia meets the actual fender, we'll have another Torx fastener to remove. It is a little challenging to get to. Now we've peeled our fender liner back. Where our fascia meets the fender, there's a screw and it comes from the back side and goes into the fender. This one's really challenging to get to. And here's the screw once we get it out.Now we'll open our rear hatch. Behind our taillight, we have a cover right here. We're going to pry this out. We have our hardware here, which holds our taillight in place. It's just a wing nut with a spring on it. We'll twist that. Now we'll grab our taillight assembly and slide it towards the back of the vehicle and we find a wiring connector here. We'll slide this red tab back. Press on the black tab. Pull to separate, that can go back inside. We'll do the same on the other side. Now with an extra set of hands, we'll grab our fascia at the corner and pull it away from our fender. Once we reach where our taillights were, there's tabs we may have to press down on in order to release it. Use a flathead screwdriver as you pull back. Once we have those released, we'll pull back away from the vehicle. We may have wiring harness attached to our fascia. So here's the wiring harness. We'll just pull it away from the fascia and it'll work its way around the vehicle. So keep pulling away from the fascia.Okay we have a wiring harness on our fascia. We need to disconnect it from this plug right here. In order to disconnect this connector, we'll take a flathead screwdriver and we'll stick it in between these two tabs and we'll twist it and pull towards us. With our wiring disconnected, we can now set our fascia aside where it won't get damaged. Now we can take our foam support here, lift it off and we'll throw it away because we don't need it anymore. If your vehicle's equipped with the rear park assist, we'll need to remove this 10 millimeter nut here that holds the bracket on for the park assist. We'll have this on both sides of the vehicle. On the passengers' side of our vehicle, we'll have four bolts like this that are 13 millimeter that's holds the bumper beam in place. We'll remove these. On the driver's side, we'll only have three. We'll need to pull our park assist sensors away. Then we can lift up on the bumper beam and pull it away from the vehicle. Now if you look up at the bottom of our frame rail, where our bumper beam bolted to, we'll have a large hole. Take one of our pull wires, go through that hole and work it out the bumper beam area. Now take one of our plates, stick it on the pull wire, place it inside and we'll thread on our carriage bolt. Keep in mind everything we do on one side, we'll repeat on the other. Now we'll pull that through and out the hole. Then we can move our pull wire. Now we'll take one of our long bolts with just the bolt and we'll thread it in the bottom outside corner just a few turns on both sides of the vehicle. Now we'll take our hitch and we'll slide it over those bolts. It will go on, you just have to have it angled the right way. There it goes. Okay with our hitch now resting on the bolts that we temporarily installed. We'll have another bolt, this time with a lock washer and a flat washer on it. We can take our bumper beam this time and we'll push it up against the vehicle and we'll thread through the top inside hole, since we have park assist on this vehicle. And we'll just get it started a few turns. On the driver's side, we'll use the top outside hole. With these in place now, we can lift our bumper beam up and remove our bottom bolt. Do this on both sides. On the passengers side, we'll swing our park assist sensors back in place, they line up over the hitch and our bumper beam and we'll install the hardware to secure it all together. We'll put our remaining hardware in on the passenger's side. On the driver's side, we'll place our bottom inside one in now. We'll remove our top outside one. Slide our park assist bracket back over and bolt it back into place. And install our bottom outside one.Now we'll tighten down those bolts. Now we'll take our hitch support bracket, go over our carriage bolt that we installed on the frame. Place a flt washer over it, a lock washer, and we'll loosely thread on a nut. Now take one of our 3/8 bolt, a washer, we'll go through the bracket and in through the hole on the side of the hitch. And we'll thread on a flange nut to the bolt on the other side. Now we'll tighten the half inch diameter carriage bolt first. Now we'll tighten the bolt on our support bracket to our hitch. Now we'll torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. We'll make sure we reinstall the 10 millimeter nut for our park assist sensors. Now we went ahead and marked out on our fascia the area that we need to trim out to fit around our hitch. We can use a sharp utility knife for this or a rotary tool, which is what I'm going to use. Now we'll take our trim piece here and work it around our edge. Now we'll just cut off our excess. Now we can reinstall our fascia, making sure we plug back in any wiring that we have. Now we'll reinstall our taillight assemblies. And that completes our look at and showing you how to install the EcoHitch hidden class 2 trailer hitch receiver, part number 306-X7310 on this 2017 Volkswagen Golf.

A few years ago I installed a Curt trailer hitch on my VW GTi. It was the only hitch available for my car at the time, it was easy to install, and served well. It did, however, hang a little lower than I preferred and was known to drag. This past Winter I bought myself a Christmas present: an Eco-Hitch hidden receiver hitch and installed it in late April. (Too cold for working in the driveway up to that point.) It was a way more involved installation than the previous hitch and took me pretty much all afternoon. Fortunately there are both print and video installation guides available. The results are worth it. The new hitch is naturally braced in multiple planes and pretty much does not sway. It sits a few inches higher, so the dragging problem is gone. If I were starting from scratch I would buy both the hitch and the bike rack in 2”. My otherwise very nice 1-1/4” Kuat rack does twist some on bumpy roads and the larger rack body should pretty much eliminate that. You should also be aware that you will lose the foam spacer that protects your rear bumper from minor damage. Not a big deal for me but for others, who knows? FYI. Service, as always from etrailer.com , was quick and installation support excellent. If you’re in the market check them out. 639260

Ask the Experts about this EcoHitch Trailer Hitch

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Hidden Trailer Hitch for a 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI
  • I do have some trailer hitches that are hidden for your 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI but # 24949 will not fit. I recommend going with Draw-Tite hitch # 24925 or EcoHitch # 306-X7310. Once either of these hitches is installed only the receiver will be visible. These are both 1-1/4 inch Class I trailer hitches. If you want a 2 inch hitch then I recommend # 306-X7309. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory...

  • Will Draw-Tite or EcoHitch Have More Clearance Than the Curt on a 2015 Volkswagen Golf
  • Although we didn't have a chance to install the Curt Trailer Hitch # C11412 that you currently own on a 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI, I can say that we installed the EcoHitch # 306-X7310 that has a 1-1/4" receiver and found that from the ground to the top of the inside of the receiver it measures 12". This should provide some extra clearance but you can verify exactly how much by taking this same measurement and comparing it to your current Curt receiver location. Even if the Draw-Tite #...

  • Best Ground Clearance Hitch For 2015 Volkswagen Golf TSI
  • The trailer hitch we offer for your 2015 Volkswagen Golf TSI with the best ground clearance is the Draw Tite part # 24925 which fits right up to the bottom of the rear bumper fascia. It also does not have a crosstube that hangs down as low as the hitch opening like the other hitches have which means much better ground clearance when turning into elevation changes like driveways.

  • Is EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch A Class II Hitch for 2017 VW Golf?
  • I am happy to confirm for you that the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch # 306-X7310 is, in fact, a Class II hitch! That means you can carry three bikes with your Thule bike rack on your 2017 VW Golf whenever you like. I have added a link to a video of this hitch being installed on a '17 Golf for you to check out as well.

  • Can the EcoHitch # 306-X7310 be Used to Tow with a 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI
  • The EcoHitch # 306-X7310 has a 2,000 lb trailer weight rating and a max tongue weight rating of 200 lbs. As long as your loaded trailer motorcycle doesn't exceed these limits you can use this trailer hitch for your trailer. Something else you will need to check out is the weight capacity of your 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI itself. You should be able to find this on the door jamb of your driver's side door. You also need wiring and a ball mount with a hitch ball to complete your towing...
