Replacement Control Model For 128980 Coach Steps

Updated 09/17/2026 | Published 09/11/2026

Question:

I have coach steps model 128980, the steps will not stay out after they extend. This is a new to me 2013 Thor Challenger 47gt. The po just tied the steps up. What control module do I need? Your generic model will suffice. Thx

Hey Fred! The correct control module for the 128980 on your 2013 Thor Challenger is the Replacement Control Module for Lippert Electric Coach Step # LC301702. Since the previous owner tied the steps up, I would also check the wiring, door switch, motor, and linkage before replacing the controller to make sure there isn't another problem causing the steps to retract.

Are the steps retracting immediately after they extend? Do you hear any clicking, grinding, or other unusual sounds?

Regardless of the position of the salesman switch whenever the door is closed the steps retract.

@FredK thanks for the additional information. Since the steps extend when the door opens and retract when it closes regardless of the position of the step switch, I would check the switch and its wiring before replacing the control module. A bad switch, loose connection, or damaged wire could keep the controller from receiving the signal to leave the steps extended. If you find the switch itself is bad, you can replace it with # LC379390. I would also check for power at the switch and inspect the wiring running from it to the step controller.

Fred, I understand your frustration. I have a 2014 Holiday Rambler Ambassador. Long story short, we needed a new step controller. Unfortunately I tried to save some money and installed a Chinese copy of the controller. That effort failed. The step controller I purchased from Etrailer has successfully restored the step operation. I agree with Robin, your situation demands a check of other step operational components. However, if you find that you need to replace the step controller, I highly recommend the item sold by Etrailer.

@KentonV thanks for sharing your experience! Hopefully Fred can narrow down the problem, and if it does turn out to be the controller he'll know which way to go.
