Recommended Bike Rack for Mountain Bikes that Has a Built In Swing Away Feature

Updated 08/31/2026 | Published 08/24/2026

Question:

Im looking for a platform hitch rack for older mtn. bikes with fenders we use in winter in W. Oregon. Might consider swing-away for 22 Rav4 w/dog partner in the back.

Thanks for the information Jim! To transport two mountain bikes on your RAV4, I recommend the RockyMounts BackStage Bike Rack for 2 Bikes item # RKY10002.

The BackStage Bike Rack item # RKY10002 has a 60 lbs per bike capacity and mounts to a 2" hitch. It uses a front wheel clamp system that can extend down past fenders on the tire to secure your bikes. The wheel trays work with tires up to 5" wide so it's perfect for mountain bikes.

One of the biggest perks of the BackStage Bike Rack item # RKY10002 is that it has a built in swing away device. This will be super helpful for getting your dog out of the back without having to remove the bikes. The rack with the bikes loaded will swing 90° to your passenger side allowing you to completely open your RAV4's rear hatch.

I attached a couple of pictures below so you can see the BackStage Bike Rack item # RKY10002 being used.

What kind of dog do you have and what's his or hers name? Feel free to answer this and throw in any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.

After reviewing our needs, I decide we really didn't need the swing-away that often, and then reviewed this rack w/o the feature and others, and purchased the 2 bike Saris model. It seems very well built, and their customer service has better reviews than Rocky Mounts. The Saris model does pivot at the center of the 2 bike rails, so it isn't as close to the vehicle back (we have a 2022 Rav4 and a 2002 Tacoma Prerunner). The former has the Toyota manufactured 2" reciever, which is higher and closer to the vehicle back than other 3rd party suppliers. The Rav hitch pin hole is only 1 1/2" from the receiver face, so very little of the Saris mount system for 2" receivers ends up within the receiver. So I have a technical question. THere is no room to bore a hitch pin hole further into Rav's receiver, and I am wondering whether I can drill a 3/8" hole through the Saris mounting bar, shifted 1 1/2" towards the bike rails. There is still clearance to do so on both vehicles. The problem being how the anti-rattling mechanism/tightening rod would be in the way, within the Saris mounting bar. Any help or direction would be helpful. The 2" adaptor block on Rav will otherwise not fit fully within its receiver. Cheerfully yours, Jim
