What Yakima System Can I Use to Replace My OEM Subaru Factory Raised Rails?

Good afternoon, I have a 2012 Outback with factory roof rails. To replace them, Ive found that the Yakima Landing Pad 13 is the right adapter to make the conventional room racks work. Is that correct? I regularly carry a Thule Force XL up there and am looking for more room/flexibility to add something next to it dog bike trailer, ski carrier, etc so I want to increase the space I have to haul. I have two main questions - 1 Once the Landing Pads are in place, can I use any roof rack system for raised rails? I was looking at the Yakima Timerline or Thule Wing Bar Evo. 2 How wide do you recommend? I dont want to make the car wider/bulkier, but I want to increase the flexibility of cargo I carry. It seems like a 50 bar would just overhang the roof by a few inches on either side but otherwise not be wider than the body of the car. That sounds like a decent sweet spot? Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Joe,
The Yakima Landing Pad 13 part # Y00239 are a confirmed fit to mount in place of your factory crossbars for your 2012 Subaru Outback. However, they specifically work with SkyLine or Control towers, so they won't work with the Yakima TimberLine towers. Instead, we have the Yakima SkyLine Roof Rack for Fixed Mounting Points part # Y37TB. This roof rack has the same 50" long JetStream crossbars as the Yakima TimberLine roof rack part # Y39YD you were looking at but have the SkyLine towers to work with the Landing Pad system. They're rated for 165lbs and come with the push down rubber strips that you can press into the tracks around whatever channel mounted accessory you're using.
As far as the length goes, I'm in agreement with you that 50" would be the sweet spot. It'll barely overhang the vehicle's roof, maybe just a few inches on each side but still give you enough space to put skis and whatever else you want up there.

Thank you! I’ll order those parts now. Currently, I carry a Thule Force XL on the factory rails and will continue to do that most frequently, but would like to expand the flexibility of the roof rack for carrying additional items—bike trailer, ski rack, bike rack, etc. I appreciate the detailed reply! -Joe
