Troubleshooting Trailer Disconnected Messages on F-150
Updated 07/23/2026 | Published 07/18/2026 >
Question:
Hi: i have been having intermittent Trailer Disconnected messages on my F-150 and then there's no gain on the brake controller. Assuming brakes don't work. I replaced the cable from the trailer junction box that plugs into the truck since the old one looked bad. Problem stayed. So, I was looking at continuity between pins, and I know there is supposed to be continuity between the blue brake and the white ground. But I also have continuity between the red aux 12V and blue brake wire and between red Aux and white ground. I do have on board batteries. Thinking this isnt normal. Or is it?

Hi Bob,
From what you're describing, it sounds like the truck is losing electrical connection to the trailer. Since your trailer has an onboard battery, the auxiliary 12V circuit may be connected to the brake circuit through the breakaway system or other electronics. That can create continuity readings even though there isn't a direct short.
I would start by checking the 7-way on your truck, looking for corroded terminals and wiggling the 7-way plug to see if it triggers an error message. The easiest way would be to plug the trailer in, have someone watch the display, wiggle the 7-way in the truck's socket and then wiggle the cable near the trailer's junction box. If a message comes up, you'll have found the intermittent connection. I'd also double check that the trailer's ground is good, the brake wiring hasn't been damaged, and that the breakaway switch isn't damaged or partially pulled since that can also cause some weird circuit issues.
Once you've done some more testings let us know what you find out.

Claire: Many thanks. Cable from the truck to the trailer is new and I took it off and checked for "shorts". None. Truck is new ( 30K Miles) and recently had the Ford software glitch in the brake controller fixed and all checked OK. Truck detects the trailer and shuts off reverse brake assist and cross traffic alert when the trailer is connected. Lights always work 100% so I am eliminating the cable, ground and the wiggling ( for now ). Also took the breakaway off, checked it had not continuity then pulled the plug out and all worked perfect. Leaves me with brake wires on four wheels. Ugh. Real hard to find. They were connected with Scotchlok quick connects and not hung up very well from the factory ( in my opinion ) so they swing along under the trailer. Wish me luck as I inspect every inch and check every connector. Any suggestions on isolating the bad wire or connector? Any suggestions on a better connector to use? Thanks for the help .. wish I needed something for this task so I could buy something from you.
