Replacement Mounting Bracket for Tekonsha P3

Question:

Do you offer replacement mounting brackets for the Tekonsha P3? Mine has broken and I need to repair or replace it. Do you know of an aftermarket part that may be better than the original? The P3 itself is a nice unit, but the mounting is pretty poor. Thank you Robert

Hey Robert!

We do not currently have a replacement mounting bracket that is confirmed to work with the Tekonsha P3. It is possible that Curt's Mounting Bracket for Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller # C51114 could fit for you, but since we don't have the Tekonsha P3 in stock anymore, I'm not able to confirm that it's the same size. If you'd like to try, the interior width of this bracket is about 3-1/4" wide and you can compare that to your P3's width. This bracket is a metal bracket so it will be fairly sturdy and you can probably even bend it slightly to get it to fit if needed, but I'm curious about the conditions that caused your P3's original bracket to break to know whether this one will hold up. How'd your P3's mounting bracket break? Is it installed under your steering column and just got hit too many times?

At the top of the plastic bracket that cradles the P3 are 2 small tabs or “ears”. These attach to similar matching tabs on a small metal bracket that in turn attaches to the bottom of the vehicle instrument panel. These ears are quite thin, less than the thickness of a dime, and are made of plastic. One of these tabs broke completely and the other has cracked. They did take an occasional hit, especially in winter with thicker clothing but I think the biggest problem is they are simply too thin for the loads and vibrations they experience. The P3 unit itself seems pretty robust, but the cradle assembly is rather flimsy in comparison. I will measure the P3 and see if the Curt bracket may substitute.

@RobertF Got it, I hate that happened to you! I see what you're talking about and I found that the dimensions of the P3 are 5" long x 3-1/2" wide x 1-3/8" tall, so I think # C51114 will work for you, but you'll have to create an attachment point for the ears of the bracket to fit on the P3.
