What Size Crossbars for 2017 Toyota Tacoma for Thule Hullavator Pro

Updated 07/01/2026 | Published 06/27/2026

Question:

I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma with a Leer 100XL truck cap with Thule square bar load system 47inch bar. I am considering buying the Thule Hullavator Pro. I know I need some extended bars so the Hullavator does not hit my truck when lowering. How long of bar do I need to safely raise and lower the Hullavator? I dont know if I should buy the 53inch bars or 60?

Hey David! The easiest way to go about this is to measure the overhang on your existing 47" crossbars. Your crossbars need to extend 4"-8" beyond the feet for proper clearance with the Thule Hullavator Pro # TH898. See the attached photo.

If you add the 53" long Thule SquareBar Evo Crossbars # TH712400 you're going to gain an additional 3" on each side. If you add the 60" # TH712500 you'll gain 6-1/2" on either side. I'm sure the 53" bars will be enough, but it would be a good idea to double check just to be sure. A little extra clearance with the 60" might be a good thing depending on where the rails are positioned on your Leer.

What kind of kayak are you carrying?

@DavidM awesome! Your Eddyline Caribbean 12 FS will be a really nice match with the Hullavator Pro # TH898.
