Best Trailer Hitch For Towing A Small Trailer With A 2022 Kia Sportage

Updated 07/01/2026 | Published 06/25/2026

Question:

I’m going to be moving soon from Massachusetts to Maryland, and I’m considering renting a small trailer from U-Haul. I was wondering which trailer hitch would be the right fit for my 2022 Kia Sportage?

Hi Christopher!

To tow a small trailer with your 2022 Kia Sportage, I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Matte Black Finish - Class III - 2" # e72TR you were looking at. The price is currently the best, and the matte black finish makes it blend in better than the gloss finish other manufacturers use. Plus it's American made, so it's the one to get!

To power the lights on the trailer, you will want the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56321. This is a plug and play harness (though one wire does need to go to your battery for needed power) and shouldn't take too long to get installed. I also recommend the Curt Easy Mount Bracket # C58001 to mount the 4-Flat on the receiver opening. It makes getting connected easier.

If you are also wanting your own ball mount the etrailer Adjustable 2-Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 6" Rise, 6" Drop - 10K # e66PR is a very good option. It has plenty of capacity and can be adjusted to fit a number of different trailers, which is nice. You can rent ball mounts at U-Haul, so this isn't 100% necessary, but still figured I would mention it.

On that note, what will you be using the hitch for after you get moved?

I have the one shown. I mounted it myself. It was fairly easy with a floor jack. The holes in your Kia are already there. The bolts actually go in pretty easy if you clean them out with a small brush.

@Kevin Floor jacks definitely make it easier if you don't have a helper. What are you using the hitch for?

We needed a hitch back in 2023, to attach a wheelchair carrier to our Sportage. A local mechanic installed it for me. I lacked the physical strength to remove the carrier once in place, so it was in place until my husband passed away a few months ago. The hitch never failed us.

@LindaL Sorry for your loss. Glad this was there when you needed it.
