Is the 64 dB Noise Rating for the Onan 11,000-Watt Generator Measured at Full Load?

Updated 06/29/2026 | Published 06/24/2026

Question:

It states that this generator is as low as 64 DB under load is that full load or half? Would be nice to know what the DB are for 25 50 and 100 load?

Hello Sam,

That's a great question. I reached out to Cummins to get some clarification on this for you.

They confirmed that the published 64 dB noise rating for the Onan 11,000-Watt Tri Fuel Portable Generator # CM98MR is based on full load. As the electrical load decreases, the generator's engine doesn't have to work as hard, so you can expect it to become quieter during lighter loads.

Unfortunately, Cummins does not publish separate decibel ratings at 25%, 50%, and 100% load for this generator. They explained that they typically only provide noise ratings at multiple load levels for their larger 20 kW and higher generators. For the # CM98MR, the only published specification is the 64 dB rating at full load, so I can't provide specific noise levels at partial loads.

In real-world use, if you're only powering a few smaller appliances, the generator will generally be quieter than when it's supplying its full output. The exact noise level will vary depending on how much power is being drawn, but Cummins has not released measured decibel values for those lower load conditions.

Are you planning to use the generator primarily for RV camping, home backup power, or something else?
