What Could Cause The Blue Ox Patriot Brake System To Throw A Load Cell Error?

Updated 06/30/2026 | Published 06/16/2026

Question:

What would cause my Blue Ox Patriot brake system to start having issues? Like when setting to leave it has started sending a message load cell error call tech support. I have gotten it to give green light by resetting a few times though

Hey Jeff, thanks for reaching out. Honestly, if your Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR is throwing a load cell error but then works after a couple resets, I'd be looking at the load cell sensor or it's wiring starting to get flaky. The load cell is what tells the Patriot how hard it's pushing on the brake pedal, so if it's getting an inconsistent reading during startup, the unit will throw that error and refuse to calibrate. The fact that you can reset it a few times and eventually get a green light tells me it's probably not completely dead yet, but something isn't happy.

Before assuming the unit needs repair, I'd make sure it's getting good voltage from the toad. If the battery is low and giving off less than 10v it can cause the unit not to work. Also make sure the brake pedal clamp isn't binding, and the Patriot is sitting square against the seat during setup. If everything looks good and the error is becoming more frequent, I'd honestly start suspecting the load cell itself is beginning to fail.

If that's the case, I suggest reaching out directly to Blue Ox. It should be covered under warranty, and they can either service or replace the unit if needed.

It happened to me this very week, I bought the attachment for the battery tender that is supposed to keep the battery charge and is not. Maybe start there.
