Solution for Making Tap Out of Hitch Install Hardware to Get Past Stuck Threads
Published 06/09/2026 >
Question:
I am installing the hitch bracket to my Chevy 2500, 2018. The bolts that mount to the frame are having a hard time starting. What size tap is used to clean this out? I’ve tried a wire brush to move some of the rust but the bolt still does not want to start on any of the 4 holes

Hey Jimbo, are you trying to install the B and W Gooseneck hitch part # BWGNRK1016 that you ordered a couple weeks ago or something different? One way to ID the bolt would be to take it to a hardware store and match it to something there so you'd know the size or you can use a grinder and put a small vertical slit in the end of the bolt to basically turn it into a self tapper.
