Does Curt RVibrake 4 Portable Flat Tow Brake System # RVI44FR Use Same Breakaway as Patriot

Updated 06/04/2026 | Published 05/28/2026

Question:

Does the RVIBRAKE 4 PORTABLE FLAT TOW BRAKE SYSTEM 52202 use a specific break away switch? Can I use the break away switch from our Patriot? Ed

Hey Ed, just the breakaway switch portion of the Curt RVibrake 4 part # RVI44FR is the same as what would have came on your Patriot but the wiring it connects to that plugs into the unit is different so you'd have to do some splicing as long as you're okay with that. How did you like the Patriot?

As Jameson C stated, yes, you can use that; just splice it in. But I do NOT recommend the Curt RVibrake 4. I had one, and it is JUNK. If I could get the thing to start without errors, it did little to nothing. I talked to Curt for hours, troubleshooting, and it was still JUNK, so I asked for a warranty replacement after 4 months of total ownership. Well, they said no, as it was "working properly" according to them. Well, I can tell you it is pure JUNK, at least mine was, and no help from the manufacturer.

@Bob Mine did that error at startup quite a bit but then I adjusted where it was on the floor and pedal and seems better. Now it's doing a different error sometimes after hard breaking. Have to reboot the bullseye thing. It might be because I don't have the extender hooked up but I will next trip.

@Lance Oh, also, it does NOT like the cold. If it's below about 40 degrees, you might as well forget it. Yes, I mounted it in every possible position. Now I really did not have a hard time with the Bullseye thing. It was the brake system itself, but I did have the extender hooked up. All in all, the Curt RVibrake 4 is just pure JUNK!

@Bob I'm really sorry to hear that. I totally understand why you feel that way about it too. I will definitely keep this in mind when recommending braking systems going forward. Did you end up replacing it with something else?
