Can I Load A Kayak on the MOS UpLift with One End Resting On the Ground?

Question:

To load my fishing kayak onto the MOS Uplift while it’s in its down position, can I lean one end of the kayak on the loading arm/platfom of the uplift to then lift the kayak from where it’s sitting on the ground up onto those platform without damaging the uplift? I can’t do this with my Thule Hullavator due to its separate arms. The weight of the kayak pushes those arms in an unnatural angle which could easily damage or break the Hullavator. I’m hoping the MOS Uplift is much sturdier with its all-in-one platform with cross bar. It’s really the main reason I would buy this. I can’t otherwise lift and load my kayak up to my waist or higher position without having the ability for the lift assist to take on some of the weight as I lift.

Hi Meredith,

I reached out to MOS directly and they assured me that the MOS UpLift Kayak Roof Rack and Lift Assist part # MR89ZV is designed to handle loading a kayak with one end on the ground and the other on the rack with no problem! I've included a photo of someone loading their kayak this way for reference. It is important to note that while the rack can handle up to 125lbs, they don't recommend loading a kayak that weighs more than 90lbs with one end on the ground.

They also provided us with a couple good practices to keep in mind, like trying to keep the motion controlled when sliding the kayak forward to avoid dropping/impacts on the arms. They also recommend using something like the Thule DockGlide or similar cradle system with the MOS UpLift because they act as an alignment and guiding tool to make it easier to get your kayak onto the rack.
