Brake Controller Recommendation for 2006 Ford Explorer

Updated 05/13/2026 | Published 05/12/2026

Question:

I have a 2006 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4WD 4.6L V8 with factory towing package. I want to add a brake controller with the factory plug found under the driver side dash. I will rarely use the brake controller. But I want the vehicle ready to tow if I need to. I dont need or want anything fancy. I dont want to have to do much in the way of adjustment. I just want to hook up and go. The two controllers you have that I am looking at are the Curt TriFlex NEXT Trailer Brake Controller Code: C46SV and the Curt Spectrum Trailer Brake Controller Code: C72SV. Which of these will suit my needs best? Is there something else you would recommend over those two? Thanks, Justin

Hey Justin, I have a really great option for you but I don't generally like to recommend Curt brake controllers as they have a tendency to be a little on the unreliable side. So for a very similar brake controller that will be rock solid and perform better I would recommend the Redarc Tow Pro Liberty part # RED96CR for your 2006 Ford Explorer. This also comes with a custom install harness so it installs really easily as well. What are you planning on towing?

Winnebago Micro Minnie. 5500 GVWR. My buddy has a toy hauler as well (not sure on the model though). I've heard good things about the Tekonsha P3 as well. I even saw some YouTube videos posted in the past by your staff about these controllers. But I can't find them on your site anywhere..... ?

@JustinD The P3 is a great controller. I wish we could still get it but Tekonsha and the company that owned them is currently out of business. I hope they find a way to come back!
