Is Curt 13241 Hitch Safe To Use If The Washers Are Touching Up Against The Flanges?

Updated 05/12/2026 | Published 05/11/2026

Question:

I installed my hitch, curt 13241, and torqued to spec. A couple bolts were tougher to get in, as the alignment was almost too tight and narrow, but once the threads were started everything was smooth. So once installed, the washers are touching the flange in the corner. Is that safe? I have not towed with it yet, I was waiting until after I check the torque to make sure the bolts are holding.

Hey Devan, thanks for reaching out. What you’re seeing with the washers contacting the flange at the corner is normal and not a problem. As long as the bolts are torqued to spec at 86 ft-lbs and everything seated properly, you’re getting the clamping force you need.

It’s pretty common on some installs for things to be a tight fit going in, especially with factory tolerances, but once everything is started and torqued down, it all pulls together correctly. You’re good to go as long as you recheck torque after a short drive just to be safe.

What kind of trailer will you be hauling?

I will be pulling a camper, possibly up to 4200 lbs. And anywhere from 16 to 27 ft

@Devan Ok nice! That 13241 hitch can handle that just fine. Recheck the bolt torque after your first haul and maybe even recheck once a year or so after that and you'll be just fine. Happy travels! You know where to find me if you ever need anything else!
