Is 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier Limited To Vehicle Capacity

Updated 05/11/2026 | Published 05/07/2026

Question:

In the video of a 2020 Escape Hybrid you say it can handle 500 pounds. The tongue weight rating of that Escape is 150 pounds. the carrier weights 48 pounds. So is the actual load limited to 102 pounds? If so, video needs correcting.

Hi Tom; the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874 can hold up to 500 lbs. The video is specifically about the cargo carrier. We typically don't cover specific vehicle capacities, especially since there are so many possible variations with things like tow packages that can change the capabilities listed by the manufacturer.

Ultimately, you are limited by the lowest rated component on any given setup. If the tongue weight rating of your 2026 Ford Escape is 150 lbs then you can carry 102 lbs of gear on the carrier. If the vehicle had a tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs, but your hitch had a max tongue weight of 150 lbs, you would still be limited to the same 102 lbs. If you had a 1-ton with a Class V hitch then you're probably limited to the 500 lb capacity of the carrier.

What will you be using the carrier for?

Bought this carrier as an extra place to store cargo on a trip. When it arrived it was packaged very well. It was very easy to assemble and the instructions were very clear. It is well made and sturdy as I was able to stand on it to reach the carrier on top of the car. I really liked the fact that it folded up when not using it and you could fold it down to access the rear compartment of the vehicle.

I have been totally pleased with my etrailer cargo carrier. Arrived in perfect condition as was packed very thoughtfully. W/as very easy to install and has done all I expected from it plus some. I mainly bought for a western trip camping and sight seeing for 6 thousand miles over 5 weeks hauling about 250lbs of gear on my Nissan Rogue that the dealer said was rated for 200 lbs tongue weight and I had no issue other than scraping bottom of carrier on large parking lot dips which caused absolutely no structural damage to carrier or vehicle it is built rock solid. I still use a few times a year to haul things locally and sometimes think I should have considered aluminum model as I am honestly old and weak and struggle with it somewhat but they did not have the size and capacity I needed and doubtfully would be as durable, this one will last forever. I am totally confidant I made wise purchase.
