What Trailer Dolly Can Handle an 8.5% Grade?

Updated 05/05/2026 | Published 05/03/2026

Question:

Can you recommend a trailer dolly to pull a 9,000 travel trailer up an 8.5% grade? Fully loaded, the trailer might reach 10,000 lbs. I am looking to purchase such a trailer but my pad has that 8.5 grade on my property. Thank you for your help!

Hi Francis,

None of the electric trailer dollys we have are able to handle higher than a 6% grade. However, the Trailer Valet XL Trailer Dolly with Chain Drive part # TVXL2 is rated for 10,000lbs and can handle up to a 10% grade due to its chain drive feature that allows it to be used in low gear for higher grades. It's powered by an easy-to-use hand crank, and because it's manual it is the most cost-effective trailer dolly that can handle the trailer weight and grade you have. If you prefer not to use the manual crank you can power the drive with an 18V drill using the included drill bit. It has a steering handle to guide the trailer, automatic brakes to keep it from rolling, and the 2" hitch ball's height can be adjusted to fit your trailer. Please be aware that this unit does not work with Bulldog-style trailer couplers.

What trailer are you considering purchasing?
