Roadmaster Comfort Ride System for 2023 Grand Design Reflection 320MKS

Question:

I have a 2023 Grand Designs Reflection 320MKS with 6k Curt Tandem Axles, and am seriously looking at the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Slipper Spring System w/ Shocks. The website says I should a kit just about the AXLE WEIGHTS and not the axlesfoot rating. The last time we were out I weighed the whole rig in two weights, and got the axles weight at 9620 lbs, and 3,000 lbs pin weight. Combined whole setup weight was 21,820 lbs for the trailer and 9200 for the truck. So according to these numbers and RMs suggestion, I should be getting the 5k RM system instead of the 6k. The kicker here is all my holding tanks were dry and are normally dry when traveling, so there might be some times where I might carry the extra holding tanks weights. Which kit should I ? I DEFINITELY want to also get the shocks along with it.

Hello Sean, we meet again! You want the system rated for your axles, which is the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Leaf Spring Suspension Kit w/ Shock Absorbers # RM49NQ. That Roadmaster wording can really trip people up. They're trying to prevent anyone from choosing springs that are too heavy for the actual load, which can lead to a stiff ride. However, you want to make sure you aren't undersizing the system and overloading the springs.

This model includes leaf springs that match the rating on your 6k Curt axles, and is designed to fit a 3" axle diameter. You were already at 9,620 lbs with empty tanks, so moving down to the 5k system wouldn't leave much room for anything else.

If you end up with anything in the tanks, or additional gear, or even add-ons like that MORryde tray, you will quickly push that limit. Sizing down will only risk overloading the leaf springs and wearing them out faster. Sticking with the 6k system is going to give you the right balance of capacity, fit, and ride quality.

Hi Robin!!! Yes...thanks for remembering! On one hand it does make sense to size it for your typical actual weight, but then you can always add up to the axle ratings if need be. You are right- they need to explain a little bit more and allow for some ranges of each size kit. This job is going to take precedence over the MorRyde tray for this year. I was also wondering about the price...last year when I looked at this, the kit was $1725.00 Did pricing actually go up 16.5% in less than one year?! Thanks Robin!

@SeanH yeah even further down on their page it calls out the different systems are made for XXXX lb rated axles so it isn't super clear. As far as the price goes, probably, the cost of a lot of things has gone up and that is typically what drives the pricing models. I can't say for sure though, I don't have access to all of that data.

@RobinH: Another question...how can I verify that my U-Bolts will need to be replaced? Also- do they use wet bolts in the shackles; is this an option, or should I stay with the kit bolts? Is there anything else I would need to complete the purchase?

@Sean you won't have to worry about that because the latest version of the kit comes with the U-bolts. As far as the shackle bolts are concerned, the system uses Never Fail bushings that you don't want to add grease to so you will use standard bolts.
