Will 34" Wide Brooklyn Ocean Kayak Fit Yakima ShowDown

Updated 04/01/2026 | Published 03/25/2026

Question:

We have a Brooklyn Ocean Kayak that is 34inch wide. I know the Thule Hullavator will work with that. Do any other of your lifts handle that width e.g., the Yakima ShowDown?

Hey Tim, great question! The Yakima ShowDown # Y04081 is typically recommended for kayaks up to about 28" wide when using the standard kayak saddles. It does include wider SUP pads that can accommodate items up to around 36", but those are designed for flat paddleboards rather than kayaks like your Brooklyn Ocean.

With a 34" wide kayak it may physically fit on the carrier, but the saddles won’t wrap around the hull as securely. This can impact stability and make loading difficult. Our other carriers with lift assist will not work well or at all with that width either.

The Thule Hullavator Pro # TH898 is the better option for wider kayaks like yours. Its design and lift-assist system are much more accommodating for larger, heavier fishing kayaks, so you’ll get a more secure fit and loading will be easier. It is definitely worth the additional cost for the added confidence knowing your kayak is safe and secure on the roof.

Where do you usually take your Brooklyn Ocean Kayak?

We have 2 Thule Hullavators for sit on top kayaks, 28" and 33" widths. Both are huge at over 40# each. I have used them for years. We live in NY and we took kayaks to FL twice. They are very easy to use.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. We were hoping to save a bit of money, but it looks like the Hullavator is the only lift that will hold our kayak. Good to know. Much appreciated.

@TimS you're welcome! The Hullavator Pro # TH898 is pricey for sure, but it is also a high quality carrier that is worth the investment. Just make sure you have the required 4" - 8" overhang beyond the feet with your crossbars for proper fitment.
