Will SumoSprings Be Beneficial When 2018 F150 FX4 Already Has Road Active System And WDH?

Updated 03/30/2026 | Published 03/25/2026

Question:

I have a 2018 F150 fx4 super cab lariat with tow. I have installed road active system which raised the back about 1.5 inches. Also added leveling shocks in front. I tow enclosed trailer, sometimes lots of weight in box, and sometimes travel trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Would I benefit from the sumo spring and Would I need spacer if installed?

Hello Rick,

Sounds like you’ve got your 2018 F-150 FX4 set up pretty well already—especially with the RoadActive Suspension and front leveling shocks. That’s a strong foundation for towing.

You can still add SumoSprings to the rear for a bit of extra support, especially if you’re noticing squat or some side-to-side movement when loaded. They will work alongside the RAS, but I’d recommend starting with the RAS on its lowest setting so the two systems aren’t fighting each other.

For your truck, you’re looking at:

- # SSR-117-40 (1,000 lb capacity)
- # SSR-117-47 (1,500 lb capacity)

Since you’re towing enclosed and travel trailers, the heavier-duty # SSR-117-47 is probably the better fit - but just keep in mind it can feel a little firmer when you’re unloaded.

As for the spacer, the SumoSprings kit does include a 1" spacer, and that’s typically used as part of the installation to ensure proper contact with the axle. Some people decide not to use it, but I recommend using it, especially with everything else you have on there already.

At the end of the day, if your current setup is already handling the load well, you may not see a huge benefit. But if you’re still getting squat or want a bit more stability, SumoSprings are a nice add-on. They also help reduce body roll whereas the RAS doesn't really.

What kind of enclosed trailer are you usually pulling?
