Question:
I am renovating my 2005 toy hauler and am changing out the 7 pin cable and connections at the trailer. It currently has a junction box with three 7.5 amp fuses. I see all the new junction boxes are not fused. Is it ok to replace my box with one of these new ones?

Hi Jaime,
Yes, it is okay to replace your current fused junction box with a standard non fused one, like etrailer Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector part # e99011. That’s actually how most newer setups are built. The junction box itself is really just a clean way to distribute the 7 way wiring from your truck out to the trailer circuits like lights, brakes, and power. I like the etrailer junction box because it has the RV style connector attached which cuts down on wiring.
The reason your older box has fuses is that it adds an extra layer of protection right at the trailer. That’s not a bad thing, but it’s also not strictly required because most tow vehicles already have circuit protection built into their trailer wiring circuits. So modern junction boxes often skip the fuses to keep things simpler.
The one thing I would not overlook is your 12 volt auxiliary power line. If your toy hauler uses that wire to charge batteries or run accessories, you still want proper protection on that circuit, that is usually on the vehicle's side.
What year make and model are you towing with and does it have a factory towing package?
