Will the WFCO 100A Converter Plug Into My Camper, Or Do I Need a Special Outlet Or Upgrades?

Question:

I’m looking at the WFCO 100 amp Auto-Detect converter WF56FR for my travel trailer, but I’m confused about the AC plug. I have a 30-amp camper; do I have the right kind of outlet for this 100A unit or do I need something special?

Good question, Matt - and this is where a lot of people mix up AC shore rating with converter rating.

The WFCO 100a converter # WF56FR is rated at 100 amps on the 12V DC output side going to your batteries and loads, not on the 120V AC input side. On the AC side, it uses a 20-amp plug, so what matters is whether your RV has a properly protected 20-amp branch circuit available - not whether your camper is 30A or 50A overall.

In many 30-amp RVs, the converter is already on its own 15A or 20A breaker inside the power center. If yours has a 20A breaker feeding the converter circuit and a matching 20A receptacle, you’re fine. If it only has a 15A circuit, then the 100A model may not be the right fit without electrical changes such as upgrading the wiring and breaker and outlet.

So the key is checking the breaker that currently feeds your converter - not the main 30A shore power input rating.

If you can tell me what converter you’re replacing or what breaker size it’s on now, I can help you confirm whether the # WF56FR will plug in without any changes. If its not setup for this, you may have better luck with something that utilizes a 15a circuit, such as the 45a # WF58FR or 55a # WF38FR
