Question:
Does this or any transfer switch need to be in a water resistant compartment or for that matter a completely dry area? It doesnt appear the case is water tight so does it matter?

It sure does Jonathan. The Furrion Automatic Transfer Switch item # F30ATS is not water tight and definitely needs to be mounted in a dry compartment. We do not carry or do I know of an all weather option.
The Furrion item # F30ATS is a 30 amp transfer switch that automatically switches between two 120V power sources to supply power to your RV's panel. The plastic casing measures 7-3/4" long x 7-3/8" wide x 3" deep.

I installed mine in a cabinet in my camper. Not in a water tight container. Been working well.

My original reason for buying this auto switching device between primary shore power and the battery / inverter power source was to save money with a low cost 3000-watt inverter. This seemed to work a couple of times and then failed my inverter. I cannot say it was a setting on the transfer switch as there is a bit you set for fast or slow switching. I broke down and purchased what my RV company recommended, and I found a good sale price with the inverter and auto switching inside the inverter. The inverter driven circuits excluded the AC and Microwave. I bought the Xantrex. It works well but on occasion I need to push the start button so keep access to the controls on the inverter. There are many versions of this with specs that may meet your needs. My friend installed it with an access panel inside his RV. I go outside and open a side door where I store stuff. I would recommend a Wi-Fi control if access is difficult.

Thanks, I sort of expected that might be the case. I have Fleetwood Pulse 24D on a Sprinter 3500 chassis. I don't have a generator any more having elected to rely on shore power & my solar system with a 3000 watt inverter when 120V power is needed. The manual "switch" I have requires the shore power cord to be plugged into a 30 amp outlet in the far rear exterior driver side compartment which is mostly but not completely enclosed. It collects rocks, dust and moisture when driven in wet conditions.
