Should Bias Ply Boat Trailer Tires be Replaced with Radials

Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 01/04/2026

Question:

I drive on the interstate for about 6 hours to and from my homes. I just bought a boat with 275/75 D15s. Should I change to a radial instead? I really dont want a blowout while on the highway.

Hey David, I would prefer you go with a radial over the bias ply as they are just better suited for highway use and they track a little better. That said, if you are happy with the ride quality and everything you may as well stick with what you have. You might check the speed rating of the tire though to be sure it has a higher rating as a lot of bias ply tires are rated a bit lower.

If you decide to go with radials the part # AM10245 is a really solid option with a higher 81 mph speed rating.

Hey David, how did things turn out with the radial tires for your boat trailer? Did you notice any difference in how they handled on your long highway drives? Your feedback could help others deciding between radial and bias ply tires.
