How do I Hook Up My Pop-Up Trailer with 5 Round to My 7 Way on My Truck?

Updated 01/02/2026 | Published 12/28/2025

Question:

Hello, I just bought a used 1992 palomino pop up truck camper and I was wondering what would be the best product or way to connect its 5 pin round connector to my 2023 gmc 2500 7 pin or 4 pin connector

Hello Jacob,

Congrats on the new pop-up camper, that’s an awesome find and definitely adventure-ready.

A 5-pin round connector is not something we see very often anymore, so there is not a simple plug-in adapter available. The best solution is to replace the connector on the camper so it matches the 7-way on your 2023 GMC 2500.

To do this, you would cut off the existing 5-pin round plug on the camper and wire the camper’s trailer wiring directly into the TowSmart Black Plastic, 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector - Trailer End # TS82ZR. This will allow the camper to plug straight into your truck’s factory 7-way.

When making the connections, be sure to match the wire functions rather than relying on wire colors, especially on an older camper. Once everything is wired, plug the camper into the truck and test the lights to make sure all functions are working properly. If you need a wire tester, the Hook Probe Circuit Tester # PTW2993 works great!

Now for the real question, where are you taking the Palomino for it's first trip?
