Can 2010 FWD Ford Escape with Automatic Transmission Be Flat Towed

Updated 12/01/2025 | Published 10/29/2025

Question:

Hello! I see that you have flat-tow packages for the Ford Escape. What I don’t understand, is how it’s possible to flat-tow a 2WD vehicle with an automatic transmission. Wouldn’t that overheat the transmission due to lack of proper lubrication? And if not, how? Thank you very much!

Hey Avery, that's a good question.

It actually outlines this process in your owner's manual for the 2010 Ford Escape. On models with FWD and automatic transmission, it details directions to make sure you have the transmission fluid level checked by an authorized dealer AND to start the engine and allow it to run for five minutes at the beginning of each day and every six hours thereafter during your trip.

It outlines other detailed steps for flat towing the vehicle safely that you'll want to review, too.

Do you already have parts picked out for your flat tow setup? I'd be happy to make some recommendations if not!
