Which Brakes Are Correct Replacements For 2022 Forest River Flagstaff 5th Wheel With Dexter ABS

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 10/28/2025

Question:

We tow our 2022 Forest River Flagstaff fifth wheel with Dexter Tow Assist. Are the 8K ABS brakes the correct replacements? I think that's what we have.

Kevin, yes - the Dexter 8K ABS brake assemblies # DX55WR are the direct replacements for the Tow Assist setup used on Dexter 8K Flagstaff axles that have the Tow Assist system. They mount to the same 4-bolt flange and plug right into your existing ABS and brake connectors.

If your axle tag shows 7,000 lbs instead of 8,000, then the correct set would be the # DX69WR (Left) and # DX79WR (Right). Always match the replacement to the axle rating on the tag to keep your Tow Assist system reading correctly.

Are you planning to replace both axles together, or just one set for now?

Thanks Andrew, that helps a ton. My axle tag does say 8,000 lbs and both tubes measure about 3-1/2". I’m ordering the #DX55WR pair. Anything else I should replace while I’m doing the brakes?

@Kevin Good confirmation, Kevin - that 3-1/2" tube and 8K tag make it a sure match for the # DX55WR assemblies. When you’re doing the swap, it’s worth checking the mounting hardware and drum surfaces for wear, especially if the trailer’s got some miles on it. Once you’re done, power the trailer up and make sure your Tow Assist light turns solid green - that means both sensors are talking. Let me know how the install goes!
